Energy In Your Practice
Sep 01, 2020Hi, this is Dave Kats with Therapist Consultants. I have a tip for you.
You know, one of the things I have found over time is that the therapists that grow are therapists that have energy in their practice. Now, you don't have to be a wild person or anything like that or be flamboyant. You just have to be full of energy.
One of the things I say is your practice is going to grow when you are one step more enthusiastic, one step more energetic, than your patient. Now, you can't be a wild person. If the person comes in and they're depressed, you have to be just a little more energy than them. If they come in and they're doing pretty well, you have to be just a little bit higher than them. Wherever they're at, you have to be one step higher than they are because people will go to the place where the energy flows from. If they get energy from you, they will keep coming to you.
I used to have a therapist that was working for us, and she was very slow in her walk and in her approach. She walked with her head down, she shuffled her feet, and she was the epitome of no energy. She would go to the reception area and pick up this couple for marriage counseling. She would go to the back. She'd walk and she'd shuffle to the back in front of them. She was slow.
She would sit down, and I would imagine that when she got into the room, she'd say, "Well, what's your problem?" They'd say, "Well, we were going to come to you for marriage counseling, but after watching you walk in here, we'd like to talk to you about depression."
In other words, if you don't have the energy, they're not going to stay with you. The old saying, if you're on fire, people come just to watch your burn. You got to make sure that you have the energy that makes people want to flock to you and stay with you. Even if they're not getting good results immediately, they'll stay with you till they do because they believe in you as well as therapy.
This is Dave Kats. Thanks for listening
