Hi, this is Dave Kats with Therapist Consultants, and I have a tip for you. A lot of times people ask, "What's hot? What's an active thing that's going on in therapy right now?" One of the biggest changes I've seen over the last five or six years is the move from doing single sessions, like 50-minute sessions to doing dual sessions with certain numbers of your patients.
Now, you don't have to do dual sessions with everyone. I know some therapists that do marriage counseling that say they need dual sessions with everyone. Instead of running from 9:00 to 9:50, they run from 9:00 to 10:40. That gives you two full sessions. How do you price a full session? You can price them the same as you do single sessions. If you want to, you can give a discount. I know one therapist that is very popular, they charge $150 for their services. If you do a dual session, the second one is just $100. It's $250 instead of $300. Your dual sessions, I want to tell you that it's not a sales job. Some people say, "I don't know if they're going to accept that." They don't have to accept it. Here's what you do. You simply say to them, "There are three ways we can handle this. You can come in and do just single sessions. They're 50-minutes long. Some people do that. Some people do sessions where we do dual sessions back to back, and you'll come in and go for about an hour and 40 minutes. That's a dual session. We get a lot more accomplished that way and a lot of people choose that way. Then there's intensives, and those are basically for people who might be in crisis with one problem or another. Now, which do you prefer? Do you prefer to do single sessions? Do you think that dual sessions would be best for you, or do you want to hear more about intensives?" Let them decide, and when they decide, you'll be surprised how many people will say, "I'd just like to get down the road with this aways. Let's go ahead and do the dual sessions."
